Creative Writing
2026-27 Creative Writing Audition Requirements
Overview
The mission of the Kinder HSPVA Creative Writing Department is to give students a strong foundation of writing craft and literary history so that they can develop their unique voices. Additionally, we aim to give students the skills they need to produce and publish their work using technology, performance, or traditional pen and paper, all while nurturing an appreciation for the arts in all its forms. We give students the space to work independently and collaboratively, allowing them to develop skills that help them become productive, responsible citizens at HSPVA and beyond.
When are auditions and callbacks?
The first stage of auditions for the 2026-27 school year will be submitting materials via our audition platform, Acceptd.
Submissions will be accepted from December 16, 2025 – February 18, 2026. For the written exercises, we suggest completing the assignments in one document. You will then copy and paste each prompt into the submission platform. You can NOT upload documents for the written exercises . The submission deadline for materials is Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at 11:59 PM CT.
Callbacks are by invitation only. The format of callbacks is to be determined. You will be notified if you have received a callback no later than February 25, 2026 at 7 pm. Callback instructions will be provided to students at that time. Hold the date of Saturday, February 28, 2026, for a possible in-person callback.
What do I need to prepare?
- Six-word Memoir: Write a 6-word memoir that tells us a little bit about who you are, what you do, and/or what you hope to become. You must use six words; no more, no less. Be sure to make each word count.
Here are a few examples:
Some cross-eyed kid, forgotten then found.
- Diana Welch
Born in the desert, still thirsty.
- Georgene Nunn
No future, no past. Not lost.
- Matt Brensilver
- Complete the Metaphor: A metaphor is a comparison of 2 unlike things. For example, “my backpack is a treasure chest” or “my sister is a shooting star.”
Please fill in the following blanks to create your own metaphors,
- __________________________ is a ________________________________________.
(person who cares for you)
- __________________________ is a ________________________________________.
(object)
- __________________________ is a ________________________________________.
(free choice)
Choose A, B, or C and explain how that metaphor is true. Your response should be between 150-250 words.
-
Response to Art
For this prompt, you’ll choose one piece of art from the eight images below to use as inspiration for a piece of writing. Responses must be 200-300 words long.
A few tips:
- Your writing can address the whole image or just a small part of it. The objects can be taken literally or figuratively.
- Think of the shapes, the colors, the movement, or the smells that can exist in this world.
- Consider who or what else could be in the image just outside of the border. What happened just before this image took place? What happens after?
- You do not have to address any or all of these ideas in your writing but it’s also fine if you do.
- You should not merely describe the image.
- Brainstorm ideas to see which one sparks the most excitement in you.
- Your writing can be taken from real life or fictional, writing in prose, poetry, or script.
- 60-90 second video – “Why do I want to be part of HSPVA’s Creative Writing department?
Create a 60-90 second video where you explain what you love about writing, what you like to read, and anything else you feel you should share with us. You can use the genre of your choice, but the video should just be you – no editing, special effects, music, etc. You can do this as a straight “about me” piece, or you can turn it into a spoken word performance. We want to see the authentic you, and we know that for many, showing that to us via a video may feel scary. If you’d like to turn it into more of a performance, go for it! Otherwise, just relax, smile, and tell us a little bit about yourself.
How do I upload my materials?
Submissions will be accepted from December 16, 2025 – February 18, 2026. For the written exercises, we suggest completing the assignments in one document. You will then copy and paste each prompt into the submission platform. You can NOT upload documents for the written exercises . The submission deadline for materials is Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at 11:59 PM CT.
Helpful Tips:
- Formatting – Formatting your work is not necessary. You must copy and paste your work into the submission platform. DO NOT STRESS about format. We are interested in your writing.
- Read! The more you read - poetry, fiction, non-fiction- the better your writing will be. You’ll have a better sense of rhythm, and you’ll expand your vocabulary.
- Write! Keep a journal. Write about your day or observations. Create stories and poetry. The more you write, the more comfortable you’ll be when writing for an audition.
- Practice! Work with your English teacher to prepare for the audition. Ask your teacher for feedback.
- Relax! We hope that you will enjoy this process. Please don’t try to write like what you think we want you to sound like. We want to hear your voice. You’re the only one who can sound like you.
Audition materials for the 2026-27 school year will be accepted at https://app.getacceptd.com/kinderhspva beginning December 16, 2025. The deadline to submit materials is February 18, 2026.

Dance
2026-27 Dance Audition Requirements
Overview
The emphasis of the Kinder HSPVA Dance Department program is in both ballet and modern dance. This is in keeping with the audition requirements of most professional dance companies as well as the requirements for college conservatories and university dance major programs. Due to the vigorous physical demands of a concentration in dance, students with chronic health problems and/or injuries (bad knees, weak ankles, back problems etc.) are not encouraged to apply for the Kinder HSPVA Dance Department program.
Audition Dates: Auditions are Saturday, February 21, 2026. You will choose an audition time during the application process. There are two sessions – 8:30 am - 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm. Callbacks will be on Saturday, February 28, 2026 – please hold the date. You will be notified if you have received a callback no later than February 25, 202 at 7 pm.
Length of Audition: 3.5 hours
What to bring: Ballet shoes. (Pointe section of audition will only take place during invited Callbacks.)
Audition Attire:
- Girls: Leotard and convertible tights, ballet shoes with the elastic sewn on and tie strings tucked for ballet and bare feet for modern dance. Hair should be nice, neat and away from the face and neck with no jewelry, bows or accessories other than bobby pins and/or a hair net.
- Boys: Solid T-shirt with tights or form fitting gym shorts, ballet shoes with the elastic sewn on and tie strings tucked for ballet and bare feet for modern dance. Hair should be nice, neat and pulled away and secured from the face and neck.
- If you do not have the required attire (or ballet shoes) please email Mr. Klein, Magnet Coordinator, (jklein1@houstonisd.org) at least two weeks before your audition to make arrangements to borrow what is needed.
What to Expect:
Our audition begins in ballet with an amended barre followed by exercises and combinations in center and across the floor. There will be a quick break to transition into the modern dance portion of the audition. During this time students will remove their ballet shoes and prepare to work with bare feet. The modern dance portion of the audition will consist of a warm-up in center, followed by exercises and combinations in center and across the floor. Students will be required to sight read and reproduce movement in groups for the dance faculty. Auditionees do not need to prepare a solo.
The audition will be in two groups or levels. First group will be dancers who have had 3 to 4 years of recent Ballet training. This will be the more advanced audition. The second group will be an intermediate/beginner level audition. Dancers that choose to be in the second group will observe the first group and audition once the first group is complete.
Students with pointe experience must bring pointe shoes for the pointe portion of the call-back audition. Pointe work is a prerequisite for entry into all upper-level advanced ballet classes. Previous pointe training is not required to be considered for the intermediate level class (Level 1). A Jazz Dance Combination may be given during the Call-Back Audition.
Evaluation Criteria:
- Potential for a career in dance
- Physique and Body Alignment
- Coordination and Flexibility
- Evidence of Natural Ability and Potential
- Rhythmical Accuracy
- Healthy body conducive to dance as a major or career
- Ability to sight read and reproduce movement combinations given by dance faculty.
Other Helpful Tips:
- In most ballet classes each barre exercise begins with the left hand on the barre so dancers are working with their right leg first.
- Do not talk while the instructor is teaching but do ask questions if you need additional clarification.
- Know how to stagger in a line up with one dancer forward and the next back when performing center combinations.
- Know how to line up chronologically and from left to right unless instructed otherwise.
- Participate fully in each combination at the barre, in center and across the floor.
- Hold the end of the combination until given the “Thank You” from the adjudicator.
- NO FOOD, GUM OR DRINK will be permitted during the audition, even if you are observing and waiting for your audition. Individual Water bottles will be placed in designated place in studio for dancers to use in short break time.
- NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED IN THE AUDITION STUDIOS.
- Body Language is important Smile and Enjoy!
- Thank the teacher.

Overview
Band musicians in the Instrumental Music Department are members of large and small instrumental ensembles who perform all types of music. In the senior year, they present a senior recital that is the culmination of four years of study. Whether or not they plan on studying music at the university level, graduates will be ready to continue a lifetime of rewarding musical experience whether as supporters, consumers, or performers.
The department is looking for a clear example of what you can do well on your instrument right now. At each round of the audition, they will be assessing your tone quality, rhythmic and note accuracy, intonation, your attention to the markings in the music other than the notes and rhythms, and your expressiveness. Some advice for a good performance: Do not attempt to play the most difficult music you can find or play super-fast to try to impress the panel. The way to perform your best is to perform music that you enjoy playing, and that shows off your cleanest and most expressive playing.

Classical Piano
2026-27 Classical Piano Audition Requirements
Overview
The Kinder HSPVA Classical Piano Department is designed as a classical repertoire and performance curriculum. Our goal is to enhance the technical skills, scholarly knowledge, and musical faculties of each of our students to produce the most nurturing and productive piano performance environment possible.
The piano Master Class curriculum is designed as a four-year course during which a different aspect of the piano and/or repertoire is studied, so that our studies are not redundant but cumulative. The HSPVA Piano Department is a close-knit community consisting of anywhere between 24-30 pianists. The relatively small size of our department allows for a high degree of individual attention and small class sizes (the average piano-related class has 12 students), which greatly facilitates meaningful learning and instruction.
All piano students at HSPVA are strongly encouraged to have a private instructor. Our program does not displace the role of the private instructor, it reinforces it. The private instructor/piano teacher will be responsible for his/her student’s repertoire and overall pianistic supervision. Our program seeks to elaborate on the work of the private teacher and to fill in whatever educational gaps the one-hour weekly piano lesson necessarily produces. The private instructor’s musical interpretation and methods will be respected at all times.
Many of our students go on to pursue their post-high school studies at the most prestigious music schools and conservatories in the country – schools like The Juilliard School, Oberlin Conservatory, Peabody Conservatory, the Eastman School of Music, the Moores and Shepherd Schools of Music, among others.

Orchestra
2026-2027 Orchestra Audition Requirements
Overview
The String Program at Kinder HSPVA is a performance-based program that is designed for advanced players who show an interest in and talent for high level music training and collaboration. The program offers solo performance, chamber music, and full orchestra experiences, coupled with a comprehensive curriculum that is like what a student might encounter in college music courses. These classes include music theory and history, class piano, ear training, and sight singing. Anywhere from 50 to 60% of the string program graduates in any given year will choose to study music after high school, pursuing degrees in performance, music education, musicology, music business, music therapy, and other related areas. Of those students who do not major in music, most will continue to perform in a university or community orchestra.
All string players are members of the Symphony Orchestra and the String Chamber Orchestra and can audition for membership in chamber ensembles in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year. Seniors present a senior recital that is the culmination of four years of study. Whether or not students plan on studying music at the university level, our graduates are ready to continue playing in community and university orchestras, and to be informed and passionate supporters and consumers of all styles of music and art.

What do I need to prepare?
Part 1: 30-60 second introduction – Brief video introduction of who you are, how long you have been playing and why you are interested in attending Kinder HSPVA’s Instrumental department
Part 2:
VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO, BASS
SCALES- Play the following scale (3 octaves) from memory. Choose the bowing and tempo that are most comfortable. Good intonation and tone are most important.
-
- Violin- D major
- Viola- D major
- Cello- C major
- Bass- C major
SOLO WORKS- Play two (2) contrasting excerpts, taken from a concerto, sonata or other solo work that will display both technical skill and lyrical style. You may choose to play etudes instead of a solo. It is recommended that you consult your music teacher concerning choice of excerpts. Do not use piano accompaniment. Each excerpt will be submitted individually. Each piece should not exceed 2 minutes.
HARP ONLY
SCALES- One scale of your choice, three octaves ascending and descending, hands together, in 16th notes at a tempo of your choosing.
SOLO WORKS- Approximately 2 to 3 minutes of two prepared solos showing current ability, preferably from the standard repertoire. You may use an etude or orchestral excerpt only if you do not have a solo selection prepared.
HOW TO RECORD YOUR VIDEO
Using a phone or other device, the student will make a video recording of himself or herself performing the scale and solo works that were listed above. Please follow these guidelines:
- Your entire body from head to toe including hands and instrument should be visible on the video. Position the camera so that your music stand does not block the view. You may sit or stand for your video.
- Do not use piano accompaniment on your recording.
- Make sure that the final version you submit represents your best playing. Unlike a live audition, you can keep recording until you are satisfied.
- If you are unable to record a video or upload for any reason, please contact Mr. Klein, Magnet Coordinator, to discuss alternatives. (jklein1@houstonisd.org)

Theatre
2026-27 Theatre Audition Requirements
Overview
The mission of the Kinder HSPVA Theatre Department is to graduate well-rounded theatre crafts-persons who can effectively represent themselves in all aspects of theatre. We strive to create a safe and supportive environment that develops strong theatre artists as they prepare for college training. Therefore, the Kinder HSPVA Theatre Department evaluates applicants in the following areas: Acting, Design/Theatre Technology, and Musical Theatre.
What will I submit?
- 30-60 second Introduction video (required)– Brief introduction of who you are and why you want to attend Kinder HSPVA’s Theatre Department.
- Monologue (required) – Approximately 60 seconds of a memorized monologue, preferably from a published play. (Required of all applicants.) See detailed info below.
- Musical Theatre Song (required) – An approximately 60 second video of a prepared musical theatre. You may sing acapella or with a track.
- Choose option A or B:
- PORTFOLIO - If you are interested in Technical Theatre and Design you may upload a maximum of 10 elements. These can be images, PDFs, or videos representing your design and creative work, such as artwork, drawings, paintings, collages, and/or photographs of sets, costumes, props, lighting, or other subjects. This should not include a resume. Submit material that represents yourself. One of these elements must be a video of you discussing the work you submitted.
OR
-
- CREATIVE CONCEPTS - If your main interest is Acting or Musical Theatre and you have limited design experience, complete the four (4) exercises developing a costume, set, hair/makeup and collage based on the character from your monologue or song. You may draw, paint, or use other materials (photos, magazines, etc.). You can use the worksheets provided or your own paper or materials. A video is not required.
What tips will be helpful to prepare me for the audition?
Monologue
- Prepare your monologue thoroughly.
- We encourage you to choose a monologue from a published play written since 1950 (no classical, no Shakespeare). Spoken song lyrics are not a monologue.
- Read the play in its entirety and honor the play's given circumstances.
- Choose a character that you could be cast to play. That person would be close to your age and life experiences.
- The monologue should show a strong arc. In other words, you should perform and feel very differently from the beginning to the end of the piece. We want to see the range of what you can do.
- As you perform your piece, you should see the person you are talking to in your imagination. Know who you are talking to and why you are talking to him or her. Do not speak directly to the camera.
- Really try to put yourself in the character's shoes and perform the piece honestly.
- For the video:
-
- Before starting your monologue, say the name of the play your monologue is from and the name of the character you will be playing. This does not count in the 60 seconds.
- You should be visible from the knees or waist up.
- We prefer that you stand in front a blank wall. Please no busy backgrounds.
- Please have decent to good lighting.
- To sum up, do your best when it comes to the video quality but do not stress about it. We are judging your acting, not the production quality of the video.
Musical Theatre Song
- Perform and upload 16 bars (or approximately one [1] minute) of a memorized musical theater song. Songs can be performed with live or recorded accompaniment or without music ‘a cappella. Choose a song performed by a relatable character and decide to whom your character is singing and why.
- At the beginning of your video state the title of the song, the name of the character, and full title of the musical.
Portfolio
- Your portfolio should reflect your unique personality. It should show how you respond to the world artistically and creatively. It may include work from art classes.
- The portfolio should have theatre-related items that reflect your interest in theatre. These items should reflect knowledge of a play or musical.
- The portfolio should give the theatre faculty an idea of your individual artistic interests, curiosities, and passions.
Design Worksheets
- If your main interest is Acting or Musical Theatre and you have limited design experience, complete the four (4) exercises developing a costume, set, hair/makeup and collage based on the character from your monologue or song. You may draw, paint, or use other materials (photos, magazines, etc.). You can use the worksheets provided or your own paper or materials. A video is not required.
General Tips
- Ask a teacher at your school to help you prepare for your audition.
- Rehearse your monologue and song in front of teachers, family or friends so you are comfortable performing them for the HSPVA Theatre Faculty.
- Do not call or email HSPVA with questions about the monologue, song, portfolio or worksheets. Use your best judgement and creativity when deciding what to prepare.
